Pick a bar size, enter the length and number of bars, and get the weight in kg and tonnes. Working backwards from a quantity? Enter your tonnage and see how many bars to order. Then send the whole list to our sales desk on WhatsApp.
D² ÷ 162 formula8 to 32 mmkg · tonnes · barsFe 500D · IS 1786
Results update as you type. Switch to tonnage mode to work backwards from a quantity, and add every size your site needs to one order list.
Standard TMT bars come in 12 m (about 39.4 ft).
Total weight
Weights use π/4 × D² × 7,850 kg/m³, the basis of the nominal masses in IS 1786 (the familiar shortcut is D² ÷ 162). They are estimates for planning and BOQs; the weighed weight of a lot can differ slightly within IS 1786 rolling tolerance. *Bundles use typical market bundling and may vary by size and dealer.
Nominal unit weights, worked out from π/4 × D² × 7,850 kg/m³ as in IS 1786. Per-bar weights are for the standard 12 m length.

A TMT bar is a steel cylinder. Its weight per metre is the cross-section area, π × D² ÷ 4, multiplied by the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³. With D in millimetres that works out to D² ÷ 162.2, which the trade rounds to D² ÷ 162.
The calculator uses the exact figure, so its results line up with the nominal weights in IS 1786. Multiply by the bar length and the number of bars, and you have the weight of your order.
W in kg per metre · D = bar diameter in mm
Example, 12 mm: 12 × 12 ÷ 162.2 = 0.888 kg/m
× 12 m length = 10.65 kg per bar
Tap the diameter you need, from 8 mm to 32 mm. The result panel shows the cross-section and unit weight straight away.
Use metres or feet. In tonnage mode the calculator rounds up to whole bars, so you never order short.

Weight in kg per metre is D² ÷ 162, where D is the bar diameter in mm. Multiply by the bar length in metres and by the number of bars. Example: 10 bars of 16 mm, 12 m long: 16 × 16 ÷ 162 × 12 × 10 ≈ 189.6 kg. The calculator uses the exact factor of 162.2, which gives 189.4 kg.
Weight is volume times density. One metre of bar has a cross-section of π × D² ÷ 4 square millimetres. Multiply by the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³, convert the units, and you get D² ÷ 162.2 kg per metre. The trade rounds it to 162.
A 12 mm bar weighs 0.888 kg per metre. A standard 12 m bar weighs about 10.65 kg, so roughly 94 bars make a tonne.
It depends on the size. With 12 m bars: 8 mm about 211, 10 mm about 135, 12 mm about 94, 16 mm about 53, 20 mm about 34, 25 mm about 22, 28 mm about 17 and 32 mm about 13. Use “Bars for my tonnage” for your exact quantity.
Close, but not exact. The calculator uses nominal weights. IS 1786 allows a small rolling tolerance on mass per metre, so a weighed lot can be a little heavier or lighter. Use the figures for estimates, BOQs and site planning.
TMT bars are usually supplied in 12 m lengths. If you cut bars on site, enter the cut length in metres or feet and the calculator does the rest.
